We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed.
Perplexed, but not in despair.
Persecuted, but not abandoned by God.
Struck down, but not destroyed.

Odex offers olive branch to anime downloader’s - ST, Home, Wednesday September 5 2007

Odex is allowing illegal anime down loaders to go scot-free if they stop downloading animes this Monday. This may be good for some, but I believe that by doing this Odex is allowing these people to get away. Just as one anime downloader said "...you would have to be living under a rock to still be able to say that you don't know unauthorised downloads are illegal..."

As such, most people who download these animes illegally would surely know that they are breaking the law, and not respecting the creator's intellectual property rights. They perform such acts in the hope of not being caught. Therefore, when caught, they should still pay. They should not be let off so easily.

The reason why people turn to downloading items illegally from the internet would be that they value their money so greatly, to the point that if they look for ways to do things in which they can evade spending money.

The root of this problem of over thrift, and greed would be the state of our society today.

Firstly, the surge of fake and pirated goods, looking very much like the real ones, but being sold cheaper, are becoming more common. Now, people can get more or less the "same branded goods" for a fraction of the original price. The same then applies to downloading illegally from the internet. Original VCDs of movies are readily available to the public. But pirated movies of good quality are too readily available online and for free. Why not just download the movie then? It saves cost, but I get the same result. Apart from this, parents too are buying pirated goods. When their kids see this, they themselves think its okay; and so the cycle continues.

Secondly, people have become numb to buying illegal items. A survey by the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore states that only 1 in 5 Singaporeans are concerned about piracy. I feel that lax enforcement is the reason. If the authorities came down harder on those who buy and sell pirated goods, I suppose that the situation would be much better.

The article also states that Odex is still appealing the court’s decision of blocking it from attaining the details of down loaders. Isn’t this a form of protection by the law for those who deserve to be punished for the wrongful acts? My stand would be that everyone who has downloaded items illegally should pay; the court should allow the details of these offenders to be given to Odex.

Therefore, stricter laws, and heavier punishments are needed. In addition, parents have to set examples for their children; only then, would we see a decrease in piracy. The olive branch should not be offered to offenders.
